From infrastructure to innovation – the transformation of EVs
Lifestyle & Leisure

As World EV Day is marked today, Swansway Motor Group is taking a look back at how far the industry has come in two decades of electric vehicle (EV) evolution.
Twenty years ago, EVs were seen as niche, futuristic and often impractical. Concerns around charging times, limited range and a lack of infrastructure meant that, for many drivers, an electric car felt out of reach.
Fast forward to today and the car market looks very different. Charging networks have expanded dramatically, with more rapid charging points than ever before across the UK. Battery technology has come on leaps and bounds, delivering ranges that make long-distance journeys possible and practical.
John Smyth, Director at Swansway Motor Group, said: “We’ve seen an incredible rate of change in the EV market over the last 20 years. Where once customers were hesitant, we’re now seeing growing enthusiasm and confidence in electric motoring. The shift has been supported by government investment in charging infrastructure, as well as advancements in technology that have made EVs more practical, affordable and appealing to everyday drivers.”
Customer attitudes have shifted significantly with many drivers now seeing EVs not only as viable but desirable, thanks to their lower running costs, smooth driving experience and environmental benefits.
John continued: “We’re passionate about helping customers find the car that’s right for them, whether that’s electric, hybrid, petrol or diesel, but there’s no doubt that the momentum behind EVs is only getting stronger. We’re proud to play our part in supporting customers as they make the switch, celebrating just how far we’ve come this World EV Day.”
Developments in ultra-fast charging, improvements in battery recycling and the growth of the second hand EV market all point towards a future where electric driving is even more accessible and sustainable.
