St Andrew’s Dance to Health Crewe is limbering up for a new season after securing Sport England funding.

The classes have been going for seven years at the Bedford Street church and now organisers hope to spread the word about the benefit of dance for health and welcome new people.

Class leader Bettina Carpi told One Crewe: “Dance to Health is a falls prevention programme that runs weekly throughout the year. Originally set up in January 2018, our group has been going through Covid and is officially the loveliest, friendliest, happiest and most welcoming group I have had the pleasure to teach.”

The group meets weekly for two hours to dance, exercise and socialise.

Bettina, an experienced dance artist and trained Postural Stability Instructor, says the group aims to improve physical and mental wellbeing, reduce isolation and increase independence and interest in dance and provide a cost-effective solution to the problem of falls.

She added: “Many of our participants are on waiting lists for essential surgery such as for example hip and knee replacements (and other surgery) and we know that people who are active, strong and fit will recover quicker after surgery. Dance to Health helps participants pre and post op.

“Ultimately Dance to Health improves quality of life by keeping people fit, healthy and independent for longer. It’s like a youth club but for older people, building friendship and community which has wider benefits for everybody involved.

“We have just been awarded new funding through Sports England and we are open to welcoming new members.”

St Andrew’s Dance to Health Crewe meets every Wednesday morning from 10am – 12pm and costs £3 per session which includes a tea/coffee and biscuits.
