Historic day marked in spectacular style in Crewe
Lifestyle & Leisure

Crewe Day returned for its annual celebration of community, heritage and local pride on Saturday.
The free event brought together residents, businesses, community groups and visitors for a packed afternoon of activity across the town centre.
Organised by Crewe Town Council and supported by Crewe BID and Discover Crewe, Crewe Day celebrates the anniversary of the first trains passing through Crewe Station on July 4th, 1837, and has become one of the town’s biggest annual events.
Almost 190 years later, the event commemorates the town’s railway heritage, engineering legacy, community spirit and the people who make Crewe what it is today.
Additional support for this year’s event has been provided by Crewe-based breakfast manufacturer Mornflake.
This year’s programme featured The People Powered Rocket by Walk the Plank, one of the UK’s leading outdoor arts companies, alongside giant elephants and a giant lantern, live music and performances, artisan and makers markets, heritage activities, brewery tours and family-friendly attractions.
Visitors also enjoyed activities at Crewe Heritage Centre, travel back in time to 1837 and experience the spectacular Miniature Steam Up with Foxfield Railway.
Cllr Jill Rhodes, leader of Crewe Town Council, said: “Crewe Day is an opportunity to celebrate everything that makes our town special. It celebrates an important part of the town’s history, but it’s equally about the people, organisations and businesses that make up our community today, and bringing them together for a day everyone can enjoy.”
Crewe BID, which represents businesses across Crewe town centre, Nantwich Road and Grand Junction Retail Park, supported this year’s event as part of its work to promote Crewe, support local businesses and encourage more people to visit and spend time in the town.
Rose Horner, Crewe BID Manager, said: “Crewe Day is a fantastic showcase for the town as it brings people into Crewe, shines a spotlight on the businesses, organisations and attractions that make the town unique, and creates a brilliant atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
“Events like this play an important role in encouraging people to spend time in the town, support local businesses and discover everything Crewe has to offer.”
