PLATFORM – Crewe’s first art gallery and community artspace – is opening its doors in the former Burtons shop in the town centre.

And Crewe Photographic Society is the first to grace the walls of the bright and airy space with a picture exhibition running from this Saturday to January.

The Market Street premises, previously a Dorothy Perkins & Burtons fashion shop, is now ‘home’ to CreweCreates.

The not-for-profit community interest company (CIC) was founded in 2023 to spark creativity, support artists and makers, and grow the town’s cultural and creative economy.

Co-director Jamie Chalmers said: “We were previously based in the former Works, now Greggs, and ran several creative workshops there from October to February this year.

“Now we’ve signed a 10 year lease for this wonderful new space. It’s a big leap but we’re committed to Crewe and have big plans for the building. If we can get the funding, we are excited to deliver them and to find new ways to support the creative community in Crewe and the surrounding areas.”

Jamie, a contemporary embroidery and textile art curator and CreweCreates co-director, Novae Baghurst, bring decades of experience in artistic practice, creative mentoring and community development.

He added: “Our core funding is from the Arts Council via Cheshire East. We are currently fundraising for building development projects while also seeking out grants and contracts to run creative services in the local area.

“We are leading on establishing a Local Cultural and Educational Partnership as well as getting involved in conversations about cultural devolution. We are open to partnership working with local business and encourage support from people living and working in Crewe and the surrounding areas.”

Crewe Photographic Society is delighted to be exhibiting in the newly-refurbished space.

The Society is displaying 42 framed prints with a varied subject matter including landscapes, sport and wildlife in monochrome and full colour.

Secretary Peter Robinson said: “We are thrilled to have been asked to display our members work. Some have been helping with the refurbishment by decorating and generally tidying it up in preparation for its grand opening coinciding with the Crewe Christmas lights switch-on.”

Crewe Photographic Society meet at New Life Church in Fuller Drive, Wistaston every Thursday evening between 7:30pm and 9:30pm. The season runs from September to April.

The Society welcomes new members. Whether you’re just starting your photographic journey or have years of experience behind the lens, Crewe Photographic Society is the perfect place to share your passion, learn, and connect with like-minded individuals.

The programme features exciting elements such as competitions, inspiring guest speakers, hands-on demonstrations, and engaging discussions about members’ photographic work.
