A Crewe charity supporting adults with additional needs has moved home – but it didn’t have very far to go – just round the corner on Crewe Gates Industrial Estate!

Supported Community Business (SCB) has moved 100 yards away to premises twice the size where it can grow its labelling and packaging operation.

Since 1998 it was based on Quakers Coppice in a unit of 2,800 sq ft. Its new home on Gateway is more than twice size at 5,700sq ft and trainees are loving the bright and airy space.

CEO Alex Muirhead said: “People don’t come to SCB to pass time. They come to be part of something—to build confidence, develop skills, and experience the world of work in a supportive, structured environment.

“Many of the people we support access SCB through funding arranged by social workers and the local authority, making placements accessible to those who need them most.

“Over the last 6–8 months SCB has undergone one of the biggest changes in the charity’s history with our relocation into our new premises at Gateway, Crewe.

“Whilst moving premises is stressful for any organisation, for a charity supporting adults with additional support needs it was an especially significant challenge because maintaining stability and routine for our trainees was incredibly important throughout the process.

“We found this great place just a stone’s throw away and are very happy here.”

SCB is currently supporting 28 individuals and intends to grow while remaining committed to staying in Crewe.

They package and label everything from children’s crayons to door handles and hinges and also build wooden planters.

Alex added: “The move has also helped us strengthen the professional side of what we do commercially.

“Many people still wrongly assume charities like SCB simply provide activities to pass the time. In reality our trainees complete genuine customer work every day including packaging, assembly, labelling and woodwork projects for businesses across the local area.

“The new workshop allows us to continue developing these opportunities in a more organised and efficient environment whilst still keeping the focus firmly on meaningful support, confidence building and personal development.”

The charity would love to hear from anyone who can support its work.

Meanwhile it has a football match taking place at Crewe Alexandra FC on May 24 where donations can be made on the gate.
