Crewe Heritage Centre turns back the clock for 1940s weekend

Visitors are invited to step back in time and experience the sights, sounds and spirit of wartime Britain for Crewe Heritage Centre’s 1940s Weekend on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September.

The event celebrates the Centre’s Crewe at War exhibition, which explores Crewe’s vital contribution to the war effort during the Second World War. Throughout the weekend, the exhibition hall will be transformed into a living celebration of the 1940s, featuring live music, historical re-enactment, family activities, vintage entertainment and heritage attractions.

Visitors can enjoy performances from Kyle Evans as George Formby, bringing the much-loved entertainer’s music and humour to life, alongside wartime and vintage favourites performed by the fantastic Lancashire Belle.

Adding to the atmosphere, guests will have the opportunity to meet Winston and Clementine Churchill re-enactors, providing a unique chance to come face-to-face with two of the most recognisable figures of the Second World War.

For those wanting to get involved, Severnside Lindy will be offering Lindy Hop dance sessions throughout the weekend, giving visitors the opportunity to learn some of the energetic dance moves that became popular during the era.

A special highlight on Saturday only will be a fascinating talk by local author and Second World War historian Mark Potts, exploring the impact of the Blitz on Crewe. During the one-hour presentation, visitors will discover why Crewe became a target during the war due to the strategic importance of its railway network and factories producing vital war materials. The talk will feature historic photographs showing bomb damage across the town, comparisons with the same locations today, and powerful first-hand accounts from local people who lived through the air raids.

Families can also enjoy traditional 1940s games and activities, explore the Crewe at War exhibition, and discover how the railway town played a crucial role in supporting Britain’s wartime efforts.

As an added attraction, a visiting steam locomotive will be operating on the Centre’s miniature railway on Sunday only, providing a rare opportunity for visitors to experience authentic steam power and adding another element of living history to the weekend.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy a selection of delicious refreshments throughout the weekend. Becky’s Bakes will be serving a tempting range of homemade cakes and sweet treats, while additional hot and cold drinks, light bites, sandwiches and refreshments will be available from the Crewe Heritage Canteen. Before heading home, visitors can pick up a souvenir from the Crewe Heritage Centre gift shop, where a range of gifts, toys, books and keepsakes are available for all ages.

Visitors of all ages are encouraged to dress for the occasion and join in the fun. From RAF pilots and land girls to factory workers and evacuees, 1940s outfits are warmly welcomed and help bring the sights and sounds of wartime Britain to life across the site.
