Excitement builds as AfroFest gets set to launch in Crewe
Community

Cheshire Afro Festival is building strong momentum ahead of its summer launch, with a growing number of community organisations now onboard to support the vibrant new event in Crewe.
The free festival, taking place on June 6 at Queen’s Park, promises a colourful celebration of African and Caribbean culture, bringing together music, dance, food and community spirit in what is believed to be a first-of-its-kind for the region.
One big attraction will be a joyous dancing parade round the park, led by the Carnival Queen in dazzlingly form.
Families will be encouraged to dress up and come ready to dance to the carnival beat.
Meanwhile CreweCreates is rallying round volunteers to create the Carnival Queen’s outfit which will go on display at its Platform base in the town centre and the Lyceum Theatre a few weeks before.
The digital screen on Lyceum square is spreading the word about the festival, turning the heads of many passers-by.
Organised by Amaka Lawton, founder of the award-winning Alpha Omega Women Peace & Security (WPS) Foundation and Nantwich Street Angels, the festival continues to grow in scale and ambition.
She said: “A few months ago this was just an idea. Now we have a date, a venue and the support of some wonderful local people.
“We’re also thrilled to have our local Filipino community involved. They’re contributing a singing duo, helping with the decorations and also having a stall.
“It is wonderful to these organisations involved. There’s a natural synergy between us as we all share a commitment to celebrating local creativity and engaging diverse communities.
“With just a few short weeks to the festival, we’re working flat out to make AfroFest 2026 a big success.”
The event has also attracted support from Alpha Omega Securities in Crewe.
The company is providing use of its event director in planning and executing the operational side of the event, in addition to providing security.
Organisers aim to make AfroFest an annual event in Crewe.
Amaka added: “Collaboration is key. We would love to hear from anyone interested in becoming part of the festival.”
Novae Baghurst of CreweCreates added: “We’re busy helping to recruit and coordinate volunteers, both for the festival itself and to support the making of the Carnival Queen’s outfit.
“On the day, we’ll be there to support the event and will also run a family-friendly headdress-making activity to encourage participation and celebration.
“We’re already chatting about ideas for how this could grow even bigger next year, which is really exciting!”
Sponsorship offers local businesses an opportunity to raise profile and show their support not just for the event but for Crewe and South Cheshire as a whole.
Benefits include brand visibility across event signage, media and social platforms, VIP access and hospitality opportunities as well as branded zones, giveaways and interactive displays.
Applications are also open for vendors to showcase their artistry and craftsmanship at AfroFest Market featuring African print clothing, handcrafted jewellery, hair and beauty products, art and sculpture and other cultural items.
