Heritage Open Days return to Crewe with a packed programme of free events

Heritage Open Days is returning with a packed programme of free activities helping residents and visitors explore the town’s unique heritage, history and community stories.
Starting this Friday in Crewe, Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, with thousands of free events and experiences taking place across the country.
The festival gives people the chance to discover the heritage on their doorstep, uncover fascinating stories and explore places they may not normally have the opportunity to visit.
This year’s Crewe programme, coordinated with support from Crewe Town Council and in partnership with Crewe Heritage Trust, includes guided heritage walks, heritage exhibitions, creative workshops, open buildings and the Crewe Heritage Fair, offering something for all ages and interests.
Cllr Ben Wye, who is leading a series of heritage walks during Heritage Open Days, said: “I’m really excited to be leading heritage walks again this year as part of Heritage Open Days. It’s a fantastic opportunity to discover and share the stories, people and places that helped shape Crewe into the town we know today. Whether you’ve lived here all your life or you’ve recently moved to the area, there’s always something new to learn about our rich local heritage.”
Among the highlights are guided walks exploring the origins of Crewe, the Victorian history of Queen’s Park, the fascinating world of chimney pots and the inspiring life of campaigner Ada Nield Chew.
Visitors can also take part in creative activities including the 20,000 Women Zine Project, explore the Stories of Change exhibition at YMCA Cheshire, step inside the historic Crewe Hall, and meet local heritage organisations at the Crewe Heritage Fair.
All Heritage Open Days events in Crewe are free to attend, although some activities require or recommend advance booking.
Heritage Open Days returns to Crewe from 11-20 September.
