Crewe schoolboys return triumphant after epic cycling fundraiser

Two cycling schoolpals and their dads returned home to a hero’s welcome after putting their pedal power behind an epic fundraising challenge for The Joshua Tree children’s charity.

Shavington Academy pupils Alfie and Kaiden raised a staggering £5070 by riding 170-miles from Cambridge United Football Club to Crewe Alexandra Football Club.

They took on the gruelling journey with their dads Chris Simcox and Mike Jennings and family friend Sam Lewis – and there was a fantastic homecoming awaiting them.

Mike is a policeman with Cheshire Police and Chris is a driver with Freshfield Eggs in Shavington and they arrived back on Gresty Road flanked by two trucks.

Alfie’s mum Stephanie Simcox said: “The boys are home – and all in one piece! It was physically and mentally challenging but they kept each other going. There were hills, canal footpaths and punctures along the way, and legs so tired they just had to spur each other on to keep going, but now they’re home and we couldn’t be more proud.”

Stephanie, who works for Kaplan UK, kept the local community informed with posts on Facebook. Many people got behind them with messages of support.

She added: “They did 83 miles first day, 63 on second day and then the home straight, Stafford to Crewe. It certainly tested them but in their own words it was all worth it to help the children and families in need.”

Kaiden and his family have experienced first-hand the compassion and support offered by The Joshua Tree, having attended the charity while his younger sister Faye was undergoing treatment.
