The new Mayor of Crewe is as much at home in a radio studio as he is in the council chamber.

Stuart, who took the chains of office earlier this month, is an ardent film fan who for many years presented ‘At The Movies’ on The Cat community radio.

His first job was in a video shop, then Odeon Chester, which later became the Storyhouse, and then Blockbuster Video for 15 years.

He managed several stores including the Earle Street branch in Crewe and when Blockbuster was took a bow, he joined The Cat to start his movie show featuring reviews, news and movie specific music, from soundtracks to popular songs written for them.

He stepped down recently to focus on his new mayor role – but doesn’t rule out a return to presenting his popular show.

He said: “Interestingly what got me into community work was a left turn in career choice from retail management to photography.

“Once I qualified, I ran a side business called Phileas Photography predominantly working for local councils, charities and community groups.

“My work was used for media releases, social media posts, leaflets and posters. I fell in love with the work people were doing and wanted to be a part of that. The photography came to an end after the pandemic but it still holds a place in my heart.”

Of his radio career, he added: “I may yet return to the show once my mayoral year is over, but for now this is where I know I want to be. My view on a good life is a life lived to help others, and with this and my work with the Co-op, I’m so happy to be where I am now – except maybe when I’m watching a movie!”

As Mayor, Cllr Stuart Mackay will represent Crewe throughout the coming year, attending community events, supporting local charities and organisations, and acting as an ambassador for the town.

Cllr Mackay, who works as a Member Activator for the Co-op, added: “For the year ahead, it is important to me that we continue to celebrate the diverse and innovative culture of Crewe, including supporting the bid for the Town of Culture award in 2028 once the shortlist is announced.

“I am excited for the Dome to open this year. I have visited the Warrington Youth Zone and the facilities and dedication of the team to give young people a positive first step into adulthood is exciting to have for our young people in Crewe.

“We have the Queensway space being developed, the Southern Gateway allowing visitors to walk and cycle from the station to the town centre, and we have the coming Cheshire Archives, all of which adds to the appeal of Crewe to the wider population.

“As a Crewe Heritage trustee, I am keen to promote the amazing innovations that have come from Crewe, and the legacy that gives us in the modern business sectors of the town.

“For my charity focus, I want to help community groups delivering dementia support and men’s mental health to raise awareness of the work they do, as well as charities and other organisations working to support those affected in and around Crewe.”

Cllr Mackay takes over from Sally Graham as Mayor. Of her year, she said: “It was absolutely amazing. I have enjoyed it immensely. People have been so appreciative of the time we have offered as the Mayoral team.

“Somebody asked me recently what I thought the meaning of life is – why are we here? My answer is that our only purpose is to do whatever good we can – and when we are gone, to leave at least a shadow of the good behind us. That is what I have always tried to do. I sincerely hope I have succeeded to some degree to do that in my year as Mayor.”
