New look for landmark Nantwich Road shop

Eddie Davies, owner and manager of United Carpets in Crewe, has recently undertaken a refresh of the signage of the shop which fronts on to the busy Nantwich Road.

To help celebrate the new look, Graham Saunders, Chair of Crewe BID, cut the blue ribbon to mark the event.

“It was time for a change,” said Eddie. “The external paint had been red for a long while. We wanted to tie it in with the general corporate re-brand which went from red and yellow to dark and light blues. We’ve already had lots of comments from customers who like the new look!”

The landmark store has been owned and managed by Eddie for 16 years, having bought the franchise back in 2010.

Asked about his best moments in that time, he told One Crewe: “There’s not one specific thing, but I’m very proud that the business has grown every year – and having repeat customers, and those that recommend us to family and friends, is priceless.

“And a personal highlight was adopting Max, a sheepdog cross who was found as a stray in 2016. He was joined in 2022 by Betsi, a Staffie, who had belonged to a close friend who passed away, so it was only natural she came to us.”

Graham Saunders, who cut the ribbon in his capacity of Chair of Crewe BID, is the General Manager of South Cheshire Glass, a Crewe company which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.

“I’ve worked at South Cheshire Glass for 14 years,” he told Eddie, “but many years ago I had a Saturday job at this very carpet store!”

As Chair of Crewe BID he works with several stakeholder groups to help fund events in the town, undertake improvements such as street cleaning programmes, and increased retail security.

“It’s nice to see a long established locally-owned company that is looking to the future and investing in their business,” he said.

Eddie has recently attended a flooring conference to choose new stock for autumn and Christmas, traditionally his busiest time of year.
