Community

A powerful new community initiative is underway in Crewe to honour the legacy of local suffragist Ada Nield Chew—and organisers are inviting the public to play a central role in shaping how her story is told.

The A Statue for Ada campaign is not just about erecting a monument – it’s about bringing history to life, amplifying women’s voices, and celebrating the rich heritage of Crewe. Through a series of exciting public events, residents are being given the opportunity to learn, share, and help design how Ada—and other remarkable women—are remembered.

There’s a full programme of events for 2025 including:

Designing Ada: Community Workshops: Open and creative sessions where local people can share ideas for the statue’s design and what Ada’s legacy means today. Everyone is welcome—no artistic experience needed! Ada’s Crewe: Guided Walks Explore key sites in Ada’s life in a 1.5-hour walking tour through Crewe. Learn about the places where she worked, wrote, and campaigned, and gain a deeper understanding of her world.

Project Pockets Workshop: Inspired by the traditional symbol of women’s hidden lives and unseen work, this hands-on creative workshop will explore what today’s women would carry in their pockets. Participants will stitch, draw, and reflect on their own lives while honouring the strength and resilience of women like Ada. A beautiful blend of craft, conversation, and community.

Threads of Women’s Stories: Book-based Workshops: Using the new book Threads of Women’s Stories—which features inspiring Cheshire women from 1811 to today—participants will reflect on women’s local contributions and help launch the exciting Crewe in 50 Women campaign.

Kate Blakemore Chair of the community group stated: “Ada Nield Chew was a working-class woman who used her voice to fight for equality at a time when few women were heard. We’re not just building a statue—we’re building pride in Crewe, and creating a space where women’s histories are valued and visible.”

The group has been attending local brownie and guides groups as well as local primary and secondary schools offering interactive workshops explaining the life work of Ada. So far reaching over 700 children.

From creative workshops and walking tours to story-sharing and public art, there are many ways for people of all ages to take part. The project welcomes local schools, artists, heritage groups, and residents who want to help shape this unique tribute to an extraordinary woman.
